NEW! "THRONES & RANCHES" SUMMER COURSE WITH SUPERINTENDENT McKENNA
Want to earn a 1/2 credit this summer at Griswold Public Schools? Or would you like to audit/participate in a fun-filled class that pairs the popular television show Yellowstone with Shakespeare's King Lear?
GPS will offer this summer enrichment course, taught by Superintendent Sean McKenna, to all Griswold High School students for the 2024-2025 school year (entering grades 9-12). The course is capped at 25 students.
The course will meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from July 1st - July 31st at GPS; the daily time is from 8:00 am - 11:00 a.m. If requested, transportation can be provided. While most of the classes will be in-person/live, there may be a few classes that have to be scheduled online due to pre-scheduled commitments for the instructor. Students are expected to attend all classes; students registered for credit who miss a class will be expected to complete all work assigned for that scheduled class.
Course Description: Dive into an immersive interdisciplinary learning experience where comparing stories takes center stage. This innovative course pairs Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy, King Lear, with the gripping modern narrative, Yellowstone. Together, we'll unravel complex themes of power, control, psychology, family dynamics, and territorial politics. Through comparative analysis, fun-filled activities, and creative projects, students will explore how these universal themes resonate across time and medium, offering insights into the human condition and societal structures.
Registration for summer 2024 is now closed!

Governor’s Reading Challenge 2024 – Read, Renew, Repeat
GES Students entering PreK – Grade 4 next year are invited to participate in this program during the summer. Write down the title of any books* you read in the Reading Journal. You do NOT have to fill all the lines. This is for fun. It doesn’t matter if you read 2 books or 32 books! The important thing is to fill out the information on the back of the journal with your first and last name and the name of your 2024-2025 (next year's) teacher.
*If you don’t have a printed journal, it is OK to use a sheet of paper as long as you include the information on the back. (Name, grade, teacher, etc)
Read whatever you enjoy! Current PreK-4th grade students will be receiving a paperback book to kick-off their summer reading! Slater Library in Jewett City has many resources and fun programs as well.
*If you participate in any of the public library programs or someone reads a book to you, those count. So do audiobooks, magazine articles, online articles, and ebooks.
Suggestions for grades PreK-4 can be found here.
2024 Nutmeg Book Award Winners and 2025 Nominees can be found here.
Return the journals during the first two weeks back to school in the fall of 2024. Participants will receive a certificate of participation and be entered into a drawing to win one of two Kindle Fire Tablets. HAVE FUN!
