Griswold BOE May 8, 2025 Honorees

At the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, May 8, 2025, Superintendent McKenna and the Board recognized two members of the Griswold Public School community for their hard work and contributions to moving Griswold Forward. Recognitions at the meeting included honoring a student who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and announcing the GPS Volunteer of the Year.

Griswold High School freshman Zachary McVeigh recently achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 74 in Voluntown, CT. For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Zachary planned and built a gaga ball pit at Griswold Elementary School, where he navigated the complexities of fundraising, planning, and collaboration. Superintendent McKenna also highlighted Zachary's academic achievements, involvement in the GHS music and drama programs, and more. Sean McKenna noted,

As we gather here to honor Zachary, I am reminded of our vision for our graduates: to be skilled communicators, practical problem solvers, engaged citizens, and critical thinkers. Zachary exemplifies all these qualities and more. His journey to earning the Eagle Scout rank is a reflection of his outstanding character and the bright future that lies ahead.

The second honoree was Kimberly Neilson, named Griswold Public Schools' Volunteer of the Year after many nominations in her honor. A dedicated Griswold parent, Kim has been actively involved in the schools since her daughters were young. She was instrumental in rebuilding the GHS PTO and has helped lead many of its most successful efforts. Under her leadership, the PTO launched major fundraisers like the merchandise sales, Holiday Bazaar, Winter Ball, Harlem Wizards game, and senior painted parking spots. The group has also supported student events through the Student Leadership Council, such as Mental Health Awareness Day, and boosted school spirit with fun initiatives like “Halfway There” and pre-exam treats. Kim also helps organize conference dinners for teachers. The PTO has a fabulous online presence, of which the hub is https://ghspto.org/.

Kim is not only a driving force behind the PTO's efforts—she shows up, pitches in, and gives countless hours of her time to move Griswold Forward. She is an incredible asset to Griswold schools and this recognition is well-deserved. Congratulations, Kim, on being named the GPS Volunteer of the Year for 2024-2025.

At the meeting, the Board also thanked the student representatives from each school for their monthly updates for the Board of Education.

The Griswold BOE deeply values all students, all families, and all employees. The Griswold Board makes it a point to take time at their meetings to recognize the remarkable contributions of outstanding individuals in our community.
