Griswold BOE March 27, 2025 Honorees
At the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, March 27, 2025, Superintendent McKenna and the Board recognized two Griswold High School students for their hard work and contributions to moving Griswold Forward. Recognitions at the meeting included honoring student-athletes who have each achieved significant accomplishments and milestones in their respective sports.
Abigail "Abby" Matheson, a senior from Voluntown, CT, was recognized for reaching the remarkable milestone of 1,000 career points and her leadership contributions to the Griswold High School girls' basketball team. Abby has been an integral part of the team throughout her four years at the school. She finished the 2024-2025 season with an impressive total of 1,007 points. Her dedication, hard work, and passion for the sport have been evident in every game, and this achievement is a true testament to her talent and perseverance.
In addition to this milestone, Abby has been recognized as a 3x ECC All-Star and has earned the Varsity letter for four consecutive years. She has been a varsity basketball starter for three years and has led the team as Captain for two years. Her leadership and skill were further highlighted when she participated in an All-Star game featuring the top female basketball players from Eastern Connecticut, where she was named MVP. Abby is a three-season athlete, who also participates in volleyball and softball at GHS. The Board and Superintendent McKenna were proud to honor her as a leader on and off the court.
Distance runner Tycen LaBelle, a sophomore from Preston, CT, was recognized for his exceptional achievements both in academics and athletics. Tycen has not only excelled in his studies but has also made a significant mark in the world of cross country and track events in CT high school competitions. On Thursday evening, the focus was on his recent achievements in indoor track events.
In the 2024-2025 season, Tycen broke the state record in the 3200m, capturing the Class S State Championship with an impressive time of 9:22.9, surpassing the previous record of 9:37.78. His triumphs extend beyond this remarkable feat. Tycen also emerged as the ECC Champion in both the 1600m and 3200m races. Additionally, he achieved a commendable 5th place finish in the 3200m at the State Open Championship and secured a 12th place finish in the 2 mile at the New England Championship.
Tycen's dedication, hard work, and determination have earned him All State recognition for winning the 3200m in Class S. His achievements set a new standard of excellence, and this historic moment is a testament to his commitment to distance running.
