Griswold BOE June 26, 2025 Honorees
At the Griswold Board of Education meeting on Thursday, June 26, 2025, Superintendent Sean McKenna and the Board honored two student-athletes from Griswold High School for their recent accomplishments. Both students graduated from GHS on June 13, 2025.
Matthew Perea, GHS Class M State Champion in Track & Field:
Throughout his high school career, Matt played football, basketball, and truly found his stride in track & field. In the discus circle, he tied the Griswold High School record with a throw of 166 feet 7 inches. Matt was the captain of the track and field team this season leading the boys' outdoor track team to another ECC Division title. Matt went on to win the Class M State Discus Championship with a toss of 154 feet 8 inches. Matt is pursuing competitive employment following his graduation this year – looking to apprentice in trades. Congratulations to Matt!
Brenden Hopkins, GHS State Champion in the CIAC Decathlon for Connecticut Outdoor Track:
A three sport athlete in football, indoor and outdoor track, The Bulletin reported, “Hopkins's ascent to being one of the state’s top track and field athletes in such a short time has been the stuff of legend.” Believe it or not, up until two years ago, Brenden played baseball in the spring. On June 18, he was named the CIAC Decathlon champion at Veterans Stadium in New Britain – a first ever title for any Griswold High School athlete! This past weekend, he placed 7th Overall in the Adidas Nationals 2025 Decathlon. Brenden holds the Griswold High School record for the Pole Vault with a clear of 13 feet 6 inches, an event which helped him win the State title.
Beyond athletics, Brenden was a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, Chamber Choir, the stage manager for the last two spring musical productions, and more.
Brenden will continue his education and compete in the decathlon for Tiffin University in Ohio. Congratulations to Brenden!
