Multilingual Learners ML/ELL
Supporting Language, Culture, and Academic Growth
Griswold Public Schools celebrates the rich diversity of our students and families. Our Multilingual Learners (MLs)—also known as English Learners (ELs)—bring unique perspectives, languages, and experiences that strengthen our school community. Our schools are proud to serve students who are learning English as an additional language. We provide instruction that supports both academic growth and English language development.
We believe that language is an asset and that every student’s voice deserves to be heard and valued.
Aligned with the Griswold Forward Mission, Vision, and Goals, our multilingual learner program helps ensure that:
-
Students develop English language proficiency across listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
-
Academic achievement is supported in all subjects through personalized and research-based instruction.
-
Social and emotional learning is woven into daily interactions to help every student feel connected and confident.
-
Cultural diversity is honored, respected, and shared across our schools.
This work supports our district’s vision for graduates to become effective communicators, engaged citizens, critical thinkers, and resilient problem solvers — qualities that begin taking shape the moment our multilingual learners enter our classrooms.
What We Do
Griswold Public Schools provides language development instruction and academic support through our ML/ELL program. Our tutors collaborate with classroom educators to ensure that every student receives instruction tailored to their language proficiency, interests, and learning goals.
We use personalized, research-based instructional strategies to help students build confidence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Social and emotional learning is an essential part of our work — we create welcoming classrooms where students feel safe to take risks, express themselves, and grow as learners.
Our program supports students by:
-
Delivering targeted English Language Development (ELD) instruction
-
Integrating language and content learning across all subject areas
-
Encouraging students to use and celebrate their home languages
-
Helping students build strong communication and collaboration skills
-
Supporting families as partners in learning
Together, we ensure that multilingual learners are not only acquiring English, but also developing the academic and interpersonal skills they need to thrive in school and beyond.
Identification and Services
All families enrolling in Griswold Public Schools who have not previously attended a school district in Connecticut must complete a Home Language Survey.
If a language other than English is indicated on this form or other registration forms, the student may take an English proficiency screener (such as LAS Links or WIDA Screener) to determine eligibility for services.
Families are notified of program placement and receive annual updates on student progress.
Students remain in the program until they demonstrate English proficiency and are reclassified as fully proficient in English.

Family and Community Support
At Griswold Public Schools, we believe that families are essential partners in student success. We’re committed to ensuring every family feels welcomed, informed, and connected—no matter what language they speak at home.
Our schools can provide:
-
Access to important district documents in multiple languages upon request
-
Family support from multilingual teachers and staff who serve as liaisons between home and school
We also encourage families to stay engaged in their child’s learning through classroom activities, family nights, and regular communication with teachers.
This partnership between families and schools helps every multilingual learner feel connected, confident, and proud of who they are—key goals of our district’s Social and Emotional Learning commitment.
